Asking the right questions at work

Are there any mental wellbeing or anti-burnout policies in your workplace?
Where is the stress policy?
Is there a mental health first aider in your organisation?
Is there a mental health ambassador or champion?
We don't view burnout as fundamentally a mental health issue but when
ignored it invariably overlaps and impinges on mental wellbeing.
It is therefore reasonable to ask the above questions of your workplace.

Asking yourself the right questions

The knee jerk reaction might well be "I must change my career" but this is rarely the best first step.  It may become essential for someone with burnout to think about a more radical solution - but in the midst of burnout is not the time for any major decisions.

The ideal solution is of course to rectify the things that have brought the burnout on in the first place as this facilitates a person to remain and start thriving again in their original post. Occasionally however - it becomes clear that a major factor in the burnout could be a career mismatch - even if the career path was right a while back.

Questions you may need to ask yourself include...
Have I always felt there was a career mismatch?
Have I spoken to anyone about my burnout concerns?
Do I need an independent career reevaluation once my burnout is under control?

Self help versus seeking help

The ideal way for preventing and resolving burnout combines the two approaches.
ie. don't expect someone else to sort it all for you but also.... don't battle on alone.

Burnout Geese believes learning more about burnout is the key towards raising awareness and getting everyone to understand just how important it is to take steps to combat this insidious, damaging situation.

We help with...
  • the motivation to take those first steps for beating burnout
  • the understanding of why burnout arises
  • just how it does serious damage if ignored
  • tailoring an approach to your particular situation
... whether it is for you personally, for colleagues or your organisation.

The BG Poem

When career light has been dimming
and the treadmill just won't stop
your energy now draining
with frustrations fit to pop

The dragging of your body
each day it’s into work
your steps no longer steady
instead just thin ice lurks

Then one day as you’re sliding
that ice - it shows some cracks
you see them ever clearly
alongside those fading tracks

You deny it could be burnout
hours drift in escape dreams
you know there’s something wrong
as there's creaks at all the seams

It does not have to be so
leave the ice and find our rock
we just know you’ll find your footing
when you join our friendly flock

So if you’re truly wanting
all work suffering to cease
just make that one decision
and fly to Burnout Geese
